Deportivo saw their five-match unbeaten run brought to a halt on matchday six as M. Sierra struck in the 52nd minute to hand Sevilla FC a narrow victory. The hosts struggled to create openings after falling behind, managing just four total shots and an expected goals figure of 0.14 over the ninety minutes. Their task grew harder just minutes after the breakthrough when Angeliño received a red card in the 59th minute, leaving his teammates with ten men for the remainder of the contest. Despite holding 53 percent possession, Deportivo could not find a way through a resilient visiting defence anchored by Odysseas Vlachodimos, who earned an 8.2 rating for his efforts between the posts.
The visitors arrived on the back of a strong sequence that included three wins from their previous five outings, following a 15th-place finish last season with 43 points. Sevilla FC generated eleven total shots and six attempts on target, ultimately doing enough to break down a Deportivo side that had scored in each of their five prior fixtures across all competitions. While Deportivo relied heavily on the defensive work of Leo Román, whose 7.6 rating kept the scoreline respectable, Sevilla FC's efficiency proved the difference.
The three points lifted Sevilla FC from sixth to fourth in the table, putting them on 14 points and just two behind leaders Barça. Deportivo sit 6 points further back in the standings after their first defeat of the season.
Deportivo next play at home to Real Betis on 20 September.
