When these two clubs meet, the fixture carries a history that stretches across decades of Primera Division football, though recent encounters included an Athletic victory here last year alongside a Sevilla win in January. That past competitive balance shifted on matchday 2 as Sevilla FC took a 3-1 victory away from home on 22 August 2026. The turning point arrived early when Yuri Berchiche received a red card in the 11th minute. Oso opened the scoring four minutes later, and after the break, C. Ejuke netted from an I. Romero assist before I. Romero scored himself, assisted by Oso. A. Paredes pulled one back for Athletic in the 70th minute, assisted by Y. Alvarez, but the hosts could not recover despite finishing with 65 percent possession and 18 shots. Standout performers included Sevilla FC's Oso with a rating of 8.2 and Athletic's Aymeric Laporte with a 7.5.
Sevilla FC arrived on the back of a strong run that featured three wins from their last five outings, starting this matchday 4th in the table with 3 points from 1 played. Athletic entered this fixture seeking a change in fortunes after going four matches in a row without a win across all competitions, following a 12th-place finish last season with 45 points compared to Sevilla's 15th-place finish with 43 points.
This result lifts Sevilla FC from 4th to 1st in the table, leading the standings on 6 points after 15 teams have played. Athletic now sit 6 points behind the leaders. Athletic next play away at Barça on 27 August, while Sevilla FC next play at home to Atleti on 29 August.
