Athletic arrived on a lengthy winless run spanning five matches in all competitions, and that streak extended here as Barcelona claimed a clean-sheet victory on matchday one of the Primera Division. Raphinha broke the deadlock in the 37th minute with an assist from Pedri, before Fermin sealed the outcome late on in the 82nd minute. The result lifted Barcelona from seventh to the summit of the standings on six points, while Athletic remained six points adrift of the leaders in the twenty-team division.
Barcelona finished first in this competition last season with 94 points, whereas Athletic finished 12th with 45 points. Recent history heavily favoured the hosts, as historical records since 2023 show five victories for Barcelona and zero for Athletic across their previous encounters, including a 4-0 win for Barcelona in November 2025. Despite the visitors registering a resolute defensive display from goalkeeper Unai Simón, who earned a standout rating of 9, Athletic could not turn their fortunes around. Pedri also shone for the victors, collecting a rating of 8 for his efforts on the pitch.
Athletic will next play away at Celta on 30 August.
