While Valencia spent the previous term finishing ninth in the division, Deportivo occupied a very different reality before meeting on matchday 3 of this Primera Division season on 30 August 2026. Neither side had quite found their rhythm initially, with Deportivo opening through consecutive draws against Elche and Málaga, while Valencia stumbled out of the gate with a single point from their first two outings.
The match turned on a pair of unfortunate defensive errors alongside sharp finishing, as an own goal from C. Tarrega opened the scoring on thirteen minutes. P. Aubameyang struck shortly after with an assist from M. Soriano, before U. Sadiq pulled one back for Valencia in the twenty-sixth minute. Another own goal, this time by M. Diakhaby after the break, restored the hosts' advantage, while late drama saw Adrià Altimira receive a red card in stoppage time. Statistical honours fell to P. Aubameyang, who earned a standout 7.9 rating for his efforts.
The outcome transformed the league standings significantly, moving Deportivo into seventh place while Valencia languished lower down in seventeenth position. Deportivo now sit four points behind the early pacesetters Real Madrid, whereas Valencia trail the summit by eight points after three rounds of fixtures.
Valencia must quickly regroup for a daunting test at home to Barça on 6 September. Meanwhile, Deportivo face an away trip to Villarreal on 5 September.
