Villarreal finished 3rd in the Primera Division last season with 72 points, but their fourth matchday on 5 September 2026 brought a 3-2 defeat at home against RC Deportivo La Coruña that left them languishing in the lower half of the table. Despite dominating possession with 62% and registering 17 shots compared to Deportivo's 8, the Yellow Submarine could not convert their statistical advantage into a positive outcome. N. Pepe opened the scoring for Villarreal in the 19th minute with an assist from A. Perez, earning a stellar 7.9 rating for his efforts, while Nathan-Dylan Saliba also shone with a 7.6 rating.
Deportivo arrived at this fixture boasting a three-match scoring run and an unbeaten streak that included a 3-1 win over Valencia. Their resilience showed as they turned the match around through Cruz Luismi, who netted in the 43rd minute from a P. Aubameyang assist. An own goal by A. Traore in the 76th minute swung the pendulum further, before Z. Eddahchouri scored in the 79th minute, again assisted by P. Aubameyang. P. Aubameyang then capped off a brilliant display by scoring in the 88th minute, earning the highest rating of the match at 9.2, alongside Luismi Cruz who finished with a 7.6 rating.
The consequences of this five-goal encounter reshape the early league standings significantly. Deportivo jumped from 9th to 4th place with the victory, now sitting just one point behind the table-leading Barça. Meanwhile, Villarreal remain stuck in 16th place with just two points from four matches, currently standing seven points adrift of the summit.
Villarreal will look to regroup before they next play away at Dortmund on 8 September.
