Manchester City currently lead the twelve-team table on three points after the opening round of fixtures, leaving Villarreal three points behind the summit.
Dortmund arrived on the back of four consecutive victories across all competitions, a run that included a 3-2 success away at Hoffenheim. Villarreal crossed the border searching for a spark after going four matches without a win in all competitions, though the head-to-head history favoured the hosts following a previous 4-0 defeat inflicted on the Spanish side back on 25 November 2025.
Neither side could claim dominance in a tight contest defined by defensive lapses and late drama. R. Veiga opened the scoring with an own goal in the 53rd minute, before S. Mourino levelled for the visitors with an assist from G. Mikautadze in the 66th minute. S. Guirassy restored order with a goal in the 80th minute and followed up with a penalty five minutes later, earning a standout 8.7 rating. A frantic finish saw S. Guirassy turn the ball into his own net in the 90th minute, but the damage was done despite the visitors matching their opponents with six shots on target. Gregor Kobel also impressed for the winners with a 7.7 rating, while Tajon Buchanan and Péter Gulácsi stood out for the away side with respective ratings of 7.6 and 7.5.
Dortmund next play at home to SC Paderborn on 12 September, while Villarreal return home to face Real Betis on 14 September.
