Borussia Dortmund extended their winning streak across all competitions to four matches, though this Bundesliga matchday 2 encounter required a dramatic second-half turnaround. Leon Avdullahu opened the scoring just before the break for the hosts with an assist from V. Coufal, and T. Lemperle doubled the advantage in the 54th minute, set up by A. Daghim. Dortmund responded as S. Guirassy pulled one back with an assist by W. Anton, before F. Silva levelled the score following a setup from S. Guirassy. The visitors completed the comeback in the 86th minute when A. Hajdari turned the ball into his own net, sealing a victory that lifted Dortmund from fifth to second in the table behind leaders Freiburg. Standout performances included Julian Ryerson with an 8.2 rating and Wouter Burger earning a 7.5 for the home side.
Both clubs entered this fixture on the back of contrasting trajectories from the previous season, where Dortmund finished second with 73 points and Hoffenheim took fifth with 61 points. Recent encounters in this fixture have proven fiercely competitive, including a 2-1 victory for Hoffenheim here in April 2026 and a 3-2 away win for Dortmund in April 2025. Despite controlling 60 percent of possession and registering 18 shots to Dortmund's 11, Hoffenheim were unable to convert their territorial advantage into a positive result, slipping from 14th to 15th in the standings.
Dortmund will now turn their attention to continental action when they host Villarreal on September 8, while Hoffenheim look to recover on home soil against Stuttgart on September 12, a fixture that finds them sitting six points behind the league leaders.
