Real Racing Club de Santander 2 - 2 Villarreal CF — Highlights & Result

Alavés currently sets the pace at the summit of the Primera Division standings after the opening round of fixtures, holding a three-point lead over a congested pack. Following a hard-fought draw on this opening matchday of 16 August 2026, both Real Racing Club de Santander and Villarreal find themselves two points adrift of the early leaders alongside four other clubs.

Villarreal arrived on the Cantabrian coast looking to build upon the successes of the previous term, where they secured a third-place finish with 72 points. Their recent league outings had proven eventful, featuring a high-scoring 5-1 home victory against Atleti amidst mixed results across the tail end of that previous period. Meanwhile, Santander stepped onto their home turf ready to test themselves against opponents who routinely challenge at the upper end of the division.

Both clubs now turn their attention toward demanding away fixtures scheduled for 23 August. Santander will travel to face Getafe on the road, while Villarreal journey away to take on Atleti.
