Moving past the early pacesetters, the expansive 36-team Champions League table now sees the leaders sitting on six points, with Villarreal just three points behind them after a massive leap from the lower reaches of the standings. Napoli find themselves in a tougher spot further down the table, now sitting six points off the pace at the summit.
The visitors arrived on matchday 2 having scored in three matches in a row across all competitions, carrying an unbeaten three-match run into the contest. Amir Rrahmani gave them the early advantage with an 8th-minute goal, earning a team-high 7.3 rating alongside L. Lucca. Villarreal, however, turned the fixture around through Georges Mikautadze in the 23rd minute and Álvaro Santiago Mouriño González on 26 minutes, with Gerard Moreno providing the assist. Tani Oluwaseyi sealed the result late on with an 86th-minute strike supplied by Ayoze Pérez, capping a performance that earned Oluwaseyi the highest rating of the night at 7.6.
Despite Napoli generating a higher expected goals figure of 1.94 compared to Villarreal's 1.42, the hosts outshot their opponents 16 to 9 and applied sustained pressure with 52 percent possession. The home side capitalised on their four shots on target to overturn their opening European defeat, while Napoli dropped further down the league table following their second continental loss.
Both sides return to domestic action soon, with Villarreal staying at home to face Elche on October 17.
