FC Internazionale Milano moved to the summit of the Serie A table on 9 points, leaving SSC Napoli trailing six points behind the leaders after three matches of the season. Last term's champions Inter capitalized on 63 percent possession and 29 total attempts to turn a two-goal deficit into a dramatic victory, extending their scoring streak across ten consecutive matches in all competitions.
Inter arrived on matchday 3 on a five-match unbeaten run that included a 3-0 away win at Lazio, while Napoli travelled following a home defeat against Como 1907. Historical fixtures between these clubs have been tightly contested, with recent meetings including a 2-2 draw earlier in the year and a 3-1 win for Napoli. Despite that competitive history, the visitors found themselves pegged back by relentless pressure as the hosts registered an expected goals total of 3.86. Matteo Politano and Rasmus Højlund initially put Napoli ahead, but a response spearheaded by Lautaro Martínez—who earned an 8.9 rating—and supported by Marcus Thuram turned the fixture around.
The match swung decisively when Lautaro Martínez halved the deficit in the 56th minute from a Federico Dimarco assist, before Carlos Augusto supplied Marcus Thuram to equalize in the 82nd minute. Deep into the contest, Manuel Akanji provided the pass for Lautaro Martínez to net the winner in the 90th minute, capping a remarkable performance alongside teammate Andy Diouf, who received an 8.2 rating.
Following this encounter, Inter travel away to face Real Madrid on 8 September.
