Genoa CFC 0 - 2 SSC Napoli — Highlights & Result

Recent meetings at this ground have often favored the visitors, including a narrow defeat for the hosts back in February, continuing a winless streak in this fixture stretching back to 2023. That historical edge played out again as the action unfolded on matchday one of the new Serie A term, though both sides largely cancelled each other out through regular possession battles and tightly contested shooting exchanges. Despite holding respectable defensive ratings through Junior Messias at 7.5 and Morten Frendrup at 7.3, the home side failed to convert their eleven attempts.

The visitors arrived off the back of a strong previous season that saw them finish runners-up with 76 points, maintaining a scoring streak across three consecutive fixtures in all competitions. Meanwhile, the home side struggled to find their rhythm, carrying a five-match winless run into the opening weekend following a 16th-place finish last term with 41 points. That lingering lack of cutting edge showed as the visitors eventually broke the deadlock late on, courtesy of a goal from K. De Bruyne with an assist by A. Vergara in the 82nd minute. Minutes later, the roles reversed as A. Vergara netted the second with an assist from K. De Bruyne, capped by standout ratings of 8.3 for both performers alongside Amir Rrahmani.

This opening result leaves the table led by Inter amongst eight teams, while the hosts find themselves three points behind the early leaders after the final whistle. Attention now turns to the next round of fixtures at the end of the month, where the defeated side travels to face Lazio on August 30.
