Roma now lead the twenty-team Serie A table on 13 points after matchday 6, leaving both Genoa and Fiorentina sitting nine points adrift from the summit. This fixture produced a shift at the wrong end of the standings as the hosts climbed out of the relegation zone into 17th place, while their visitors dropped down to 18th.
Genoa had struggled through a difficult opening sequence to the season without a victory in their first five attempts, though they entered this contest having scored in three consecutive matches across all competitions. Fiorentina arrived with a slightly better record of one win and four goals scored over their last three outings in all competitions, but they had not won away at this stadium since October 2024. Recent history between the clubs pointed toward tight battles, reflected in previous draws including a stalemate back in May.
Despite enjoying 63 percent possession, Fiorentina could not stop M. Osmajic from opening the scoring in the 8th minute with an assist from M. E. Ellertsson, before Junior Messias doubled the advantage in the 15th minute following an assist by M. Osmajic. Junior Messias earned a standout 7.7 rating alongside teammate Justin Bijlow at 7.6, while Franco Mastantuono led the visitors with a 7.7 rating. Fiorentina pulled one back in the 73rd minute through an own goal by J. Vasquez, but the hosts held firm despite being out-shot 13 to 10.
Genoa next play away at Roma on 17 October.
