Match report
Strasbourg arrived at this Ligue 1 matchday 8 fixture on 25 October 2026 stuck in a downward spiral, having lost three matches in a row across all competitions and enduring a four-game winless run. That poor streak continued as they fell to a 3-0 defeat against Stade Rennais FC 1901. Boulaye Dia opened the scoring in the 34th minute with an assist from Przemysław Frankowski. Sebastian Szymański then added a second just before halftime, set up by Mahamadou Nagida, before rounding off the victory with his second goal in the 61st minute, assisted by Mousa Al-Tamari. Szymański earned a standout 8.9 rating for his performance. Despite edging possession with 53 percent and generating 12 shots, Strasbourg could not match their hosts' efficiency.
The victory transformed the league standings for Stade Rennais, propelling them from 7th all the way to 1st place in the 18-team table with 16 points. Their strong home form this season proved pivotal again, building on a previous campaign where they finished 6th with 59 points. Strasbourg, meanwhile, dropped from 14th to 16th place following the result, extending their recent away struggles. The historical fixture trend between these clubs continued, echoing their previous meeting on 19 April 2026 when Strasbourg also suffered a 3-0 defeat against the same opponents.
Strasbourg now find themselves sitting nine points behind the league leaders after eight matches played. Both teams quickly return to action in Ligue 1 at the end of the month and the start of November. Stade Rennais head on the road to play away at Nice on 31 Oct. Meanwhile, Strasbourg return to their home stadium to host Auxerre on 1 Nov.
