Both teams arrived on the pitch boasting active scoring streaks spanning ten matches in all competitions, but that run abruptly ended for the visitors as Bayer 04 Leverkusen claimed a 2-0 victory on matchday 4 of the Bundesliga season on 20 September 2026. The breakthrough arrived in the 44th minute when P. Schick turned the ball into the net following an assist from M. Gutierrez. The provider then turned goalscorer shortly after the break, finding the target in the 57th minute to double the advantage. That standout contribution earned M. Gutierrez the highest match rating of 9 out of 10, while teammate Mark Flekken anchored the defensive effort with a 7.9 rating.
The hosts had finished 6th in the competition last season with 59 points, while RB Leipzig placed 3rd with 65 points. Recent encounters had heavily favoured the home side, including a 4-1 victory in their previous meeting on 2 May 2026, and this latest result extended that head-to-head dominance. Both clubs had shown prolific scoring form earlier in the term, averaging at least three goals per match across their opening three fixtures, but RB Leipzig failed to replicate that output here despite edging the possession statistics with 49% to 51%.
The defeat halted RB Leipzig's bright start and dropped them from 7th to 8th in the table, leaving them six points behind the current league leaders. Meanwhile, the win propelled Bayer 04 Leverkusen upward five spots from 10th into 5th place in the standings.
After this result, Leverkusen sit 5 points behind the league-leading side Dortmund.
