Bayern now sit at the summit of the table on three points after twelve teams played their opening fixtures, leaving Leverkusen three points behind the early leaders following this result on matchday 1 on 29 August 2026. Despite dominating possession with 67% and registering 21 shots against an opponent that held just 33% of the ball, Leverkusen could not bridge the gap created by a blistering start from the hosts.
Leverkusen arrived at this fixture having finished 6th in this competition last season with 59 points, alongside a scoring run in eight matches in a row across all competitions that included a recent 4-1 home win against RB Leipzig. That attacking streak ultimately extended through late goals from P. Schick in the 77th minute, assisted by I. Maza, and C. Kofane in the 90th minute, though the visitors could not fully overturn a deficit built during the opening stages.
The hosts established their advantage immediately when L. Petkov scored in the 8th minute with an assist from F. Onyeka, quickly followed by a goal from C. Campbell in the 9th minute. D. Mokwa Ntusu then added a third just after the restart in the 46th minute, assisted by L. Petkov, whose standout performance earned an 8.2 rating alongside C. Campbell's 7.9 rating.
Leverkusen next play at home to Union Berlin on 5 September, while Elversberg next play away at M'gladbach on the same date.
