Recent meetings between these clubs had brought mixed fortunes, including an away win for Augsburg earlier in the year that added extra tension to this fixture on September 12, 2026. Leverkusen extended a scoring run to 11 matches in a row across all competitions when C. Kofane found the net in the 18th minute, assisted by E. Tapsoba. Augsburg responded after the interval as M. Gregoritsch struck twice in quick succession, first converting in the 50th minute from an H. Behrens assist and then adding another in the 55th minute with help from F. Rieder, earning a standout 8.9 rating. Leverkusen fought back late in the contest, and P. Schick equalised in the 89th minute following an assist by M. Tillman to finalise a 2-2 draw on matchday 3.
The hosts had finished 9th in the previous competition with 43 points and began the day sitting at the summit of the table, backed by four victories from their previous five outings. Meanwhile, Leverkusen had placed 6th last term with 59 points, arriving on the back of mixed form that included a recent four-goal victory against Union Berlin. Despite enjoying 63 percent possession and firing 30 shots compared to just 8 from Augsburg, the visitors had to settle for a share of the spoils.
This stalemate caused Augsburg to drop from 1st to 3rd place in the 18-team standings, now holding 7 points from three fixtures and sitting two points behind table-toppers Freiburg. Leverkusen climbed into 6th position with 4-point totals from their opening three games, remaining five points adrift of the league leaders.
Augsburg next play away at Bremen on September 19.
