A dramatic shift at the summit of Ligue 1 sees RC Strasbourg Alsace and RC Lens both sitting just one point behind the early pacesetters Lille after just two matches played in the 18-team division. For Strasbourg, this turnaround propels them from the relegation zone up to sixth place, completely altering their early-season outlook after an opening defeat where they conceded four goals. Lens, meanwhile, entered this matchday holding third position following a strong start to the new term that included five goals scored in their previous outing, but they now share that exact one-point deficit to the leaders alongside their hosts.
The afternoon swung decisively on individual brilliance after Florian Thauvin had initially put Lens ahead from the penalty spot in the 38th minute, earning a 7.6 rating for his efforts. Strasbourg turned the contest on its head after the break courtesy of Gessime Yassine, who delivered a remarkable 9.9-rated performance by netting twice in the 48th and 85th minutes. Both of Yassine's goals were set up by Sebastian Nanasi, overwhelming a Lens side whose goalkeeper Robin Risser earned a 7.3 rating. Filip Jørgensen also stood out for the victors with an 8.5 rating in a fixture where both teams registered seven shots on target.
Recent history between these clubs has heavily favored Lens, who had claimed three victories from their previous six encounters across all competitions since 2023, while Strasbourg had managed just a single win in that same timeframe. That lone Strasbourg success came via a two-goal margin away from home in February 2025, though the most recent meeting earlier this year ended in a stalemate.
Strasbourg will take to the road for their next fixture away at Troyes on 6 September, while RC Lens return home to face Lorient on 5 September.
