Liverpool arrived on the pitch having extended an ongoing run without a victory to four matches across all competitions, a sequence that included a 2-4 loss at Aston Villa. Despite that frustrating stretch, they maintained a scoring streak that stretched to six consecutive matches. Newcastle entered this Premier League matchday 1 fixture looking to build on their previous season, where they finished 12th in the table with 49 points. Liverpool had placed 5th in the same competition last term, collecting 60 points.
The match ended in a 2-2 draw on 23 August 2026, a outcome shaped by 61 percent possession and 27 total shots for the visitors against 13 attempts from the hosts. A. Elanga opened the scoring for Newcastle in the 5th minute with an assist from W. Osula, earning a standout rating of 7.6. After the interval, C. Gakpo equalised for Liverpool in the 55th minute, assisted by R. Gravenberch. J. Willock immediately restored Newcastle's lead in the 57th minute following an assist by Y. Wissa. Finally, D. Following this result, Brighton Hove leads the 18-team table with 3 points, leaving Newcastle and Liverpool both 2 points behind the leaders. Newcastle next play away at Tottenham on 29 Aug.
