Recent history between these two sides offered little reason to anticipate such an explosive meeting on 20 September 2026, following a scoreless draw earlier in the year. Yet the latest Premier League matchday 5 encounter produced eight goals as Manchester City defeated Sunderland 5–3 at home.
Manchester City had finished second in the competition last season with 78 points and started this term strongly, winning their previous five matches across all competitions. Sunderland, who placed seventh last season with 54 points, arrived lower down the standings following a mixed start to the league term. Despite the hosts holding 55% possession and registering 16 shots to Sunderland's 17, the visitors actually recorded nine shots on target and a higher expected goals figure of 3.57 compared to Manchester City's 2.82.
The goalscoring action arrived thick and fast through E. Fernandez in the 9th minute, before B. Brobbey equalised for Sunderland with an assist from E. Le Fee. R. Cherki put the hosts back ahead assisted by A. Semenyo, only for B. Brobbey to strike again with help from T. Meunier. A. Semenyo added a third for Manchester City assisted by M. Guehi, then scored again unassisted shortly after. B. Brobbey completed his hat-trick following an assist from N. Angulo, before E. Haaland wrapped up the scoring in the 81st minute with an assist from J. Gvardiol. Standout individual performances were recognised with top ratings for Sunderland's B.
