A miserable eight-match winless run and three consecutive defeats finally ended in dramatic fashion on matchday one of the Premier League. Ipswich Town banished their difficult past form thanks to a late winner, leaving visitors Sunderland stunned on August 22, 2026. Emersonn opened the scoring for the hosts in the 24th minute after a setup from J. Enciso, before N. Angulo leveled for Sunderland just before the break in the 39th minute. Just as the match seemed destined for a draw, J. Clarke struck in the 90th minute, assisted by S. Lukic, to seal the result.
Sunderland arrived on the back of a four-match unbeaten sequence, which included a win over Chelsea, though that strong run ground to a halt here despite controlling 62 percent of possession. The visitors missed the spark shown by standout performers Granit Xhaka, who earned a 7.7 rating, and N. Angulo. Ipswich relied on efficiency rather than possession, out-generating their opponents with an expected goals figure of 1.80 compared to 0.66. Alongside the decisive goalscorers, Marcelino Núñez anchored the hosts' efforts with a standout 7.9 rating, matching Emersonn as the highest-rated player on the pitch.
Following this opening fixture, Arsenal currently leads the ten-team table on three points. Sunderland sit three points behind the early leaders after failing to add to their tally. Looking ahead to the next round of fixtures, Ipswich Town travel away to face Man United on August 30.
