Brentford extended their unbeaten run across all competitions on matchday 3, though they were denied victory as Sunderland fought back to earn a share of the spoils. Vitaly Janelt, who earned an 8 out of 10 rating for the hosts, broke the deadlock in the 57th minute. However, the visitors leveled late on when E. Le Fee converted from the penalty spot in the 82nd minute. The visitors edged the statistics with 51 percent possession and five shots on target to two, while recording a higher expected goals total of 1.71 compared to the home side's 1.21.
Both teams arrived at the contest on the back of impressive upward trajectories following strong finishes in the previous competition, where Sunderland placed 7th with 54 points just one spot and one point above Brentford. Recent meetings had been split evenly since 2025, with Brentford having claimed a three-goal victory earlier in January before Sunderland triumphed in the previous fixture. With both clubs having scored in four consecutive matches across all competitions prior to this encounter, an open contest was always on the cards.
The draw moves Brentford up two places to 5th in the Premier League table, while Sunderland shift up one spot to 11th. At the summit, the division is currently led by Man City on nine points, leaving Brentford four points off the pace and Sunderland five points adrift of the leaders.
Looking ahead to the next round of fixtures on 12 September, Brentford will travel away to face Bournemouth, while Sunderland return home to host Arsenal.
