Last term saw a stark contrast between these opponents as Athletic finished down in twelfth place while visitors Club Atlético de Madrid claimed fourth. This September 5, 2026 meeting on matchday four flipped those expectations entirely as Athletic recorded a three-goal victory. N. Williams broke the deadlock immediately after the interval in the forty-sixth minute before R. Navarro added a second two minutes later, assisted by I. Williams. O. Sancet completed the scoring in the ninetieth minute. Unai Simón starred with a standout rating of 8.9 and Robert Navarro earned an 8.3 rating.
Both sides arrived on matchday four with differing trajectories through the Primera Division. Athletic had suffered three defeats in their previous five outings, including a reverse away at Real Madrid. Meanwhile, Club Atlético de Madrid travelled with a scoring streak intact across six matches in all competitions and sat fourth in the table. Their recent outings included an away victory at Sevilla FC and an unbeaten run of three matches. Despite dominating possession with sixty-two percent of the ball and registering fifteen shots, the visitors could not find a breakthrough.
Historically, recent fixtures favoured Club Atlético de Madrid, who had won four of the last six encounters between the clubs since 2023, including a success at Athletic on August 31, 2024. Athletic had claimed victory in this exact fixture on December 6, 2025, but lost the most recent meeting back in April. This latest chapter changed the landscape as Athletic converted four shots on target into three goals despite holding only thirty-eight percent possession, generating a higher expected goals figure of 1.41 compared to their opponents' 1.02.
The outcome dramatically reshaped the standings on matchday four. Athletic jumped from thirteenth up to eighth place in the table, while Club Atlético de Madrid dropped from fourth down to sixth. Athletic now sit three points behind the league leaders, while Club Atlético de Madrid are two points off the summit. Athletic will next play at home to Elche on September 12.
