After finishing a lowly 13th in Ligue 1 last term, Angers SCO have made a much brighter start to the new competition, further underlined by a 2-0 victory over ES Troyes AC on matchday 5. That leap moves them up to sixth place in the table, just six points shy of early leaders Monaco. Troyes, meanwhile, slipped down to 14th after failing to deal with their hosts on this September evening, leaving them sitting nine points off the summit.
Both sides reached this fixture following contrasting runs of form through their opening fixtures. Angers had experienced a mixed bag of results recently, including a scoreless draw away at Le Havre and a tight defeat against Stade Rennais, but showed resilience on home turf. Troyes arrived attempting to arrest a slide that featured a recent 2-0 defeat away at Lille and a heavy loss to Strasbourg, struggling to find consistency after four previous outings.
Amine Sbai proved to be the central figure of the evening, delivering a masterclass performance capped by a 9.9 rating alongside a goal and an assist. His delivery set up P. Peter to open the scoring in the 42nd minute before Sbai found the net himself shortly after the break in the 57th minute, with A. El Ouazzani providing the assist. Anthony Lopes also anchored the backline with an 8.3 rating to preserve the clean sheet, despite Troyes registering 19 shots over the course of the night.
Following this result, Troyes are now nine points behind the league-leading Monaco side.
