An incredible seven-goal contest on October 20, 2026, launched Liverpool from fifth to second in the thirty-six-team UEFA Champions League table on matchday three, leaving them just three points behind leaders PSG, while Villarreal slipped from fifteenth to nineteenth and now sit six points adrift of the summit.
Liverpool arrived on the continent holding six points from two matches and a positive four goal difference, having recently experienced mixed domestic fortunes that included a home defeat to Manchester City alongside a recovery win at Brentford. Villarreal entered this fixture with three points from two games, having recently split results between domestic play and a three-goal victory against Napoli. Georges Mikautadze opened the scoring for Villarreal in the fourth minute, and Sergi Cardona Bermúdez doubled their lead before Alexis Mac Allister pulled one back for Liverpool. Ronald Araujo then levelled just before the interval, before Alexis Mac Allister scored again and Florian Wirtz added a fourth, rendering Tani Oluwaseyi's late strike a mere consolation in a match where Liverpool registered twenty-two shots to Villarreal's fourteen and generated an expected goals total of 2.41. Standout performers included Alexis Mac Allister with a 9.2 rating and Georges Mikautadze earning a 7.5 rating.
Following this European encounter, Villarreal return to domestic action away at Valencia on October 24, while Liverpool prepare to play at home against Brighton Hove on October 25.
