Bournemouth finished 6th in this competition last season with 57 points, while Everton finished 13th with 49 points, yet this latest encounter left the visitors sitting higher in the early standings. Everton climbed from 5th to 3rd in the table with this result, putting them two points behind the league leaders, Manchester City. Meanwhile, Bournemouth moved up from 14th to 12th, now sitting five points off the top.
The hosts arrived having gone three matches without a win across all competitions, despite boasting a scoring run that stretched back nine matches. Everton's recent travels had brought mixed fortunes, including a 0-1 defeat away at Tottenham, but they carried an early positive start into this matchday 2 fixture. Recent history between the two clubs had heavily favoured Bournemouth, who had won four of their previous meetings since 2023, though Everton had claimed a victory at this ground on 2 December 2025.
Alex Scott opened the scoring for Bournemouth in the 41st minute, converted with an assist from Evanilson. That effort looked set to settle the contest, backed by an 8.3 rating for Alex Scott, until James Tarkowski struck deep into stoppage time at 90+1' to level for Everton. That late intervention earned James Tarkowski an 8.2 rating, denying the hosts a first victory of the new league term.
Bournemouth next play away at Newcastle on 5 September.
