Union Berlin finished eleventh in the Bundesliga last season with thirty-nine points, and their early struggles continued on matchday three with a 1-3 home defeat against FC Schalke 04 on 11 September 2026. The visitors took control through a twenty-fifth-minute strike by R. Gosens, who earned a match-rating of 8.2. A. Aouchiche doubled the lead immediately after the interval in the forty-sixth minute with an assist from J. Adamu. Despite dominating possession with sixty-six percent and registering twenty total shots, Union Berlin could only manage a late response in the ninetieth minute when T. Skarke scored from a T. Rothe assist, earning a rating of 7.9. Any hopes of a miraculous comeback were quickly extinguished as M. Wober added a third for the visitors in the same minute following an assist by Hwang Hee-Chan, rounding off a victory powered by goalkeeper Loris Karius with an 8.5 rating.
Both sides had endured difficult starts to the domestic term. Union Berlin entered the match fifteenth in the table after two winless fixtures, having recently suffered a heavy 0-4 away loss at Leverkusen. Schalke sat directly behind them in fourteenth place, having opened their schedule with a 0-3 defeat away at Augsburg followed by a goalless draw against Bayern. This head-to-head clash transformed the early-season landscape, vaulting Schalke up to seventh in the standings while leaving the hosts lingering near the relegation zone with just one point from their opening three outings.
Following this result, the eighteen-team league table is led by Augsburg on six points. Union Berlin now sit five points behind the leaders, whereas Schalke find themselves just two points off the summit.
Union Berlin next play away at Bayern on 18 September.
