Recent history offered little comfort to the home supporters, as the fixture records showed Roma winless against Atalanta since 2024, a run that included a home defeat on 2 December 2024 and a subsequent 1-1 draw on 18 April 2026.
Both sides arrived on strong runs of form, with Roma maintaining a seven-match winning streak across all competitions, while Atalanta entered the match unbeaten in their previous three outings. Despite that visitante resilience, the hosts dominated the statistical landscape on 5 September 2026 during this Serie A matchday 3 encounter, registering 39 shots to their opponents' 6 and controlling 67 percent of possession.
Ederson opened the scoring for Atalanta in the 47th minute, but a late surge turned the contest around. M. Hermoso equalized in the 89th minute with an assist from M. Soule, who then claimed a goal of his own in the 90th minute, assisted by P. Dybala, before Gianluca Gaetano received a red card in the 9th minute of stoppage time. Standout performers included Marco Carnesecchi with a 9.2 rating and Matías Soulé with an 8.6 rating, alongside M. Hermoso's 8.5 rating and Éderson's 7.5 rating.
The 2-1 outcome propelled Roma from third place to the top of the table on nine points, where they now lead the twenty-team division, while Atalanta dropped from sixth to seventh place, leaving them three points behind the league leaders. Roma will next play away at Fenerbahçe on 10 September.
