Recent fixtures had offered little comfort for Real Sociedad when facing opponents from the capital, including a previous 4-1 defeat at this venue back in February. That run stretched further back across all records since 2023, leaving the visitors searching for a positive outcome against a side that finished second last term with 86 points, while Real Sociedad themselves had placed 10th with 46 points.
This Primera Division matchday 1 encounter on 26 August 2026 saw Real Madrid extend their scoring run as Kylian Mbappé netted a hat-trick, opening the scoring in the 40th minute from a F. Valverde assist before Luka Sučić briefly levelled for the visitors just before half-time. Mbappé struck again in the 60th minute assisted by J. Bellingham, Vinicius Junior added a third with help from J. Bellingham, and Mbappé completed the scoring in the 80th minute following a pass from Vinicius Junior. The performance earned standout recognition for Kylian Mbappé with a 10 rating and Jude Bellingham with a 9, while Álex Remiro finished as the highest-rated for the visitors with an 8.2. Real Madrid recorded 20 shots with 11 on target against 10 shots and 3 on target for Real Sociedad, alongside 51 percent possession and an expected goals figure of 3.14 to 0.57.
The outcome propelled Real Madrid to the top of the 20-team table with 6 points from two matches, replacing a previous position of seventh. Meanwhile, the visitors dropped to the bottom of the standings in 20th place, leaving them 6 points behind the early league leaders.
Real Sociedad next play at home to Espanyol on 29 August.
