Stade Brestois 29 arrived on a miserable run without a win in nine matches across all competitions, a streak that extended further here despite a barrage of attacking intent. That winless sequence had featured a heavy four-goal defeat at Paris FC alongside a 1-1 home draw against Angers SCO, leaving the visitors desperate for a turning point on matchday 1 of the new Ligue 1 season. They took the lead on 31 minutes when R. Del Castillo scored from a K. Doumbia assist, but Le Mans responded through D. Gueye on the stroke of half-time, set up by L. Mafouta.
The hosts then turned the scoreline around in the second half when L. Mafouta netted on 55 minutes following an A. Bourabaa pass, only for K. Doumbia to equalize for Brest shortly after. Despite dominating the attempts on goal with 26 shots compared to just 8 for their opponents, Brest could not find a winner, leaving Joris Chotard as their highest-rated performer with a 7.9 score. For the hosts, L. Mafouta earned a 7.6 rating and Nicolas Kocik registered 7.5, helping share the points on an even 50 percent possession split.
Following this opening fixture, the early Ligue 1 table is led by Marseille on 3 points, with both Le Mans and Brest sitting just 2 points behind the summit. Brest finished 12th in the competition last season after accumulating 39 points, and they will now prepare for their next outing.
Brest play at home to Toulouse on 29 August.
