Recent history in this fixture had already leaned heavily toward the hosts, punctuated by a 3-1 victory for SC Freiburg in November 2024 and further success earlier in the year. That historical advantage translated onto the pitch on September 12, 2026, as SC Freiburg registered a 5-0 win against Borussia Mönchengladbach on matchday 3 of the Bundesliga. Yannick Engelhardt opened the scoring in the 23rd minute from a D. Scherhant assist, before I. Matanovic added a second before the half-hour mark with an assist by Matthias Ginter. The visitors' task grew harder when Tim Kleindienst received a red card in the 52nd minute. I. Matanovic struck again in the 77th minute, assisted by J. Makengo, and Yannick Engelhardt netted his second two minutes later following another Matthias Ginter assist. M. Eggestein completed the scoring in the 86th minute. Yannick Engelhardt finished with a stellar 9.9 rating and Matthias Ginter earned an 8.9 rating.
The visitors arrived on matchday 3 in 17th place with zero points and a goal difference of minus four, having suffered defeats in four of their last five outings. Meanwhile, the hosts sat 2nd in the table on six points with a goal difference of plus four, riding a three-match winning streak across all competitions and an ongoing scoring run that extended to five matches. That current form left the hosts enjoying 61 percent possession while taking 19 shots with nine on target, compared to the visitors' five total shots and zero on target.
This result moved SC Freiburg past their opponents into 1st place in the league table on nine points after three rounds, leading the 18-team division. For Borussia Mönchengladbach, the heavy defeat dropped them to 18th place in the standings.
Looking ahead, SC Freiburg next play away at Frankfurt on September 19, leaving Borussia Mönchengladbach nine points behind the league leaders.
