Deportivo Alavés finished fourteenth in the Primera Division standings last term with forty-three points, while Getafe sat comfortably higher in seventh after accumulating fifty-one points. On matchday one of this new competition phase on 15 August 2026, the early hierarchy took a surprising turn as Alavés produced a commanding 3-0 victory. The tone of the afternoon shifted significantly just before half-time when Kiko Femenía received a red card in the 42nd minute, leaving Getafe short-handed for the remainder of the contest.
Alavés entered the fixture carrying a scoring streak across ten consecutive matches in all competitions, backed by recent domestic form that included a notable home win against Barça. Getafe arrived with mixed results from their previous outings, featuring a win against Osasuna, and faced a difficult historical hurdle at this venue where they had previously secured a victory on 8 February 2026. Across recent head-to-head meetings since 2023, Getafe had claimed four wins compared to just one victory for Alavés, alongside a single draw.
The numerical dominance reflected the pitch action as Alavés recorded eighteen total shots with eight on target, contrasted with Getafe managing only six shots and two on target. Mariano Díaz anchored the attacking success with a standout 9.3 rating, converting a goal in the 90th minute while also providing assists for N. Tenaglia—who earned an 8.7 rating and scored in the 73rd minute—and M. Rodriguez, who added the final goal at the death. David Soria and Ramón Terrats received lower ratings for Getafe as the visitors were outmatched in possession and expected goals.
Looking ahead to their next fixtures, Alavés will travel away to face Rayo Vallecano on 20 August.
